Repealing and Amending Bill, 2025 passed in Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha passed the Repealing and Amending Bill, 2025, which seeks to remove a large number of obsolete and redundant laws from the statute book.[3] The Bill also amends the Disaster Management Act, 2005 to correct a drafting error.[3] According to Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, since May 2014 the government has repealed a total of 1,577 laws.[3] Of these, 1,562 laws have been completely repealed while 15 obsolete laws have been repealed and re‑enacted in updated form.[3] The exercise is part of the government’s ongoing legal reforms aimed at improving ease of living and ease of doing business by simplifying the legal framework.[3] Repeal of outdated laws is expected to reduce unnecessary litigation and administrative burden on courts and government departments.[3]
