Union Cabinet approves major highway projects in Maharashtra and Odisha

The Union Cabinet approved two significant highway projects under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan. In Maharashtra, a 6-lane greenfield access-controlled Nashik-Solapur-Akkalkot corridor spanning 374 km was cleared. In Odisha, the widening and strengthening of NH-326 covering 206 km was approved at a cost of Rs 1,526.21 crore. These projects are expected to generate 251.06 lakh direct and 313.83 lakh indirect man-days of employment. They will enhance connectivity and benefit aspirational districts like Gajapati, Rayagada, and Koraput in Odisha. Since June 2024, infrastructure projects worth over Rs 12.6 lakh crore have been approved in the Modi government's third term.[1]

Centre notifies new Chief Justices for Kerala, Patna, and Meghalaya High Courts

The government notified appointments and transfers of Chief Justices for Kerala, Patna, and Meghalaya High Courts on January 1, 2026. Justice Soumen Sen was transferred from Meghalaya to Kerala High Court under Article 222, effective post-retirement of incumbent on January 9. Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo from Odisha High Court was appointed Chief Justice of Patna High Court under Article 217. These followed Supreme Court Collegium recommendations led by CJI Surya Kant. Notifications were issued by the President after consulting the Chief Justice of India. Two Collegium recommendations for Uttarakhand and Jharkhand High Courts remain pending.[1]
