India Launches First Fully Digital Census from April 1, 2026
The Government of India announced on March 30, 2026, the commencement of the first fully digital Census exercise starting April 1, 2026. Data collection will use mobile applications and a self-enumeration portal available in 16 languages, allowing citizens to generate a Self-Enumeration ID verified by enumerators. The census is divided into two phases: Phase I (April-September 2026) for housing and household data, and Phase II (February 2027) for population, socio-economic, and caste data. It covers 36 States/UTs, over 6.4 lakh villages, and thousands of towns with more than 3 million enumerators involved. Reference dates are March 1, 2027 (general) and October 1, 2026 (snow-bound regions). The exercise is backed by ₹11,718.24 crore and conducted under the Census Act, 1948.
