Centre cancels NEET-UG 2026 after paper leak; re-exam to be conducted, CBI probe ordered

The Union government has cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination conducted on 3 May 2026 following confirmed reports of a large-scale paper leak and irregularities. With the approval of the Ministry of Education, the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced that the entire exam stands scrapped and will be re-conducted on fresh dates to be notified separately.[1] Over 22 lakh candidates who appeared at more than 540 centres across 550+ cities in India and 14 cities abroad are affected by this decision.[1] The Centre has also ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the leak to identify the source, modus operandi, and the extent of the malpractice network.[1][4] Political parties and student groups had been demanding either a full cancellation or a re-test in affected centres, arguing that the integrity of the examination was compromised.[4] The government has stated that protecting the sanctity of national-level entrance examinations is its top priority and that strict action will be taken against culprits and complicit officials.[1][4] The NTA is expected to release a revised schedule, detailed guidelines for the re-exam, and specific arrangements to ensure enhanced security measures.
