RBI announces major liquidity measures in 5th Bi-monthly Monetary Policy FY26

The Reserve Bank of India conducted the 58th and 5th Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting for FY 2025–26 from 3–5 December 2025, chaired by Governor Sanjay Malhotra.[1] The MPC decided key rates and took additional steps to address liquidity conditions in the banking system.[1] RBI announced Open Market Operation (OMO) purchases of ₹1 lakh crore in December 2025 to inject durable liquidity through buying government securities.[1] It also announced a 3‑year USD/INR buy–sell swap of $5 billion to further augment liquidity and stabilise the forex market.[1] OMOs are a principal monetary policy tool used to manage liquidity by buying/selling G-Secs in the open market.[1] The decisions follow concerns over tight liquidity amid global uncertainties and domestic credit growth.[1] The measures aim to ensure adequate credit flow, support growth, and maintain financial stability.[1]

Government and RBI tighten framework for digital lending and illegal loan apps

The Government of India and RBI have taken multiple coordinated steps to strengthen the digital lending framework and curb illegal loan apps.[1] The government is engaging major internet intermediaries and messaging platforms to monitor and restrict unauthorised loan app operations.[1] The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs is analysing digital lending apps and supporting citizens through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal and Cybercrime Helpline 1930.[1] RBI has separately issued guidelines on digital lending, including data protection, transparency in loan terms, and direct disbursal/repayment between bank accounts.[1] These steps follow rising complaints of harassment, data misuse, and predatory practices by unregulated digital lenders.[1] The initiative aims to protect consumers, preserve financial stability, and ensure only regulated entities or their authorised partners operate in this space.[1] Coordination between RBI, MHA, and technology platforms is central to the new enforcement strategy.[1]
